ALIA visits LMS

A closer look at media literacy and artificial intelligence (AI)

Cindy Bauwens, Director of ALIA, visited the Landesmedienanstalt Saarland (LMS) in Saarbrücken. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with media regulation, media literacy and the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

Cindy Bauwens, who has directed ALIA since September 2024, stressed the importance of media skills and regulation adapted to AI:

“Media skills and effective media regulation, designed to meet the challenges of artificial intelligence, are essential to preserve pluralism and strengthen trust in an ever-changing digital landscape. A harmonised framework at European level is essential to ensure a balance between protection and innovation. Close cooperation between Member States and the exchange of best practices play a key role in the implementation of European regulations.”

Ruth Meyer, Director of the LMS, also emphasised the responsibility associated with the use of AI-based technologies:

“The central keyword is trust. Our aim must be to make the use of AI understandable in order to preserve the reliability of media content. This includes clear labelling, detailed transparency obligations towards regulators and research, as well as ensuring that AI skills are shared across society.”

In addition to discussions on AI and regulation, the cross-border project “Media and Me – Backstage bei Medienberufen” was highlighted. This programme offers an opportunity for young people interested in the media world to discover the professional opportunities in this sector. The two directors praised the success of this initiative and expressed their desire to further strengthen cooperation.

The visit underlined that many digital challenges can only be met through international cooperation. ALIA and LMS wish to intensify their long-standing partnership in order to make an active and responsible contribution to digital developments.
