ERGA priorities for the new European legislature

Following the 2024 European elections, the European Regulators Group for Audiovisual Media Services (ERGA) published a document setting out its priorities for the new legislative period. The Luxembourg Independent Media Authority (ALIA) supports these priorities and actively contributes to discussions on the improvements needed in the European audiovisual regulatory framework to promote a free and pluralistic media landscape.

ERGA emphasises the importance of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) as the cornerstone of audiovisual regulation within the European Union. It advocates updating this regulatory framework to better respond to the challenges posed by the rapid evolution of digital technologies and consumer behaviour.

ERGA’s recommendations are structured around several key areas:

  • To ensure free and pluralistic media markets, ERGA emphasises the need to ensure a level playing field for all types of audiovisual content, regardless of their mode of distribution.
  • Protection against disinformation: The body recommends improving the regulation of audiovisual media services, particularly with regard to satellite distribution, to better combat attempts to manipulate information.
  • Protection of users, especially minors: It is essential to guarantee a safe online media environment, especially for young people. ERGA emphasises the need for clear regulation on video sharing platforms (VSP) and a media-specific approach in AI legislation.
  • ERGA emphasises the importance of close cooperation between national and European regulators to ensure the effective application of the rules established by the DSA and the AVMSD.
