“The AI Act in Action”

“The AI Act in Action”

Explaining how the new AI governance will work in practice

On January 20th, at the conference “The AI Act in Action”, held at the Chambre de Commerce, Cindy Bauwens, director of ALIA, took part in the panel “The new governance explained”, alongside fellow market surveillance authorities.

One clear message emerged from the discussions:
The AI Act is not about creating fear or complexity, it is about clarity, trust and predictability for companies.

In the intervention, Ms Bauwens focused on three key points that matter most to businesses today:

  • A clear and targeted scope
The future role of ALIA will focus on specific uses of generative AI that impact the public, notably deepfakes and certain informational content, not on all AI uses.
  •  Transparency, not prohibition
The AI Act does not ban deepfakes or chatbots. It requires transparency where realism could mislead the public, a crucial distinction for innovation, creativity and freedom of expression.
  • Governance built on cooperation
We are still in a preparation phase: the national bill No. 8476 is ongoing and the AI Act is not yet applicable. Our priority is therefore dialogue, coordination with authorities such as the CNPD, and close cooperation with the European level, with a strong focus on guidance.
