On March 17, 2025, ALIA ruled on a complaint filed by the Hungarian Media Council (NMHH) against RTL+ (VOD) regarding an episode of “Való Világ”, broadcast on July 18, 2024. The complainant alleged that RTL+ had violated the human dignity of one of the participants in the said programme.

Background and Case Analysis

As RTL+ is a service operated by a provider established in Luxembourg, ALIA was responsible for reviewing the complaint. The investigation concerned a scene in which a male candidate imposed unwanted physical contact on a female candidate, despite her clear and repeated refusal. The scene showed physical coercion, with the contestant being forcibly restrained and having her mouth covered.

The reality show “Való Világ”, inspired by the “Big Brother” format, is highly popular in Hungary. The candidates are continuously filmed in a setting controlled by the production team. ALIA emphasized the service provider’s responsibility in selecting the scenes to be broadcast. It determined that broadcasting this scene without appropriate intervention or contextualization contributed to the banalization of behaviours that violate the candidate’s human dignity.

ALIA concluded that this scene constituted a serious violation of human dignity under Article 26bis of the Luxembourg Electronic Media Law. It also noted that broadcasting such content reinforces sexist stereotypes and contributes to the normalization of unacceptable behavior.

Decision and sanction

Given the severity of the incident and a previous warning in November 2024, ALIA decided to impose a fine of 25,000 euros on RTL+ for failing to comply with the obligations to protect human dignity.

This decision may be subject to appeal before the competent courts.
