Audiovisual media service providers falling within the competence of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg are subject to ALIA’s supervision.
As part of its supervisory mission, the Authority ensures in particular that the programmes broadcast by the radio services within its remit:
It should be noted that providers with a concession or permission may be required to comply with additional provisions arising from the requirement specifications of such concessions and permissions.

Today, most radio stations in Luxembourg broadcast using FM (analogue frequency). However, these frequencies are saturated, making it difficult to launch new stations or expand existing ones. This limits media pluralism, which is essential for democracy.
To address this issue, Luxembourg has begun deploying a modern technology called DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting), already used in neighbouring countries such as France, Germany, and Belgium. This technology allows for more radio stations to broadcast, with better sound quality and a broader coverage area.
The role of ALIA in this deployment is to issue an independent opinion on radio applications, in connection with the call for applications organized by the Department of Media, Connectivity and Digital Policy (SMC) for the allocation of available slots on one or more multiplexes.
DAB+ is a digital broadcasting system, as opposed to FM, which is analogue. This means:
A single DAB+ frequency can broadcast multiple radio stations simultaneously (through a system called multiplex).
Clearer sound without interference.
Free and anonymous listening, unlike internet radio.
Nationwide coverage in the short term for mobile reception.
DAB+ devices are already mandatory in all new cars sold in the EU since 2021.
