On 7 May 2026, the municipality of Hesperange hosted a round table at CELO, the municipality’s cultural and community centre, on the theme of “Social media and disinformation”. The discussions highlighted the fact that disinformation remains a major challenge for our democracies, in a context where artificial intelligence is opening up new possibilities for creating misleading content, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish truth from falsehood. In the age of AI-generated content, our trust in what we see is being increasingly tested.
The discussions also highlighted that disinformation is a moving target: its strategies, formats and narratives are constantly evolving in line with technological advances and the dynamics specific to social media. Faced with this reality, media literacy must remain agile, innovative and capable of continually adapting its approaches and tools. Finally, participants reiterated the vital importance of reliable news sources and quality journalism in ensuring an informed public debate and strengthening democratic resilience.
Speakers included Théo Antunes, legal expert specialising in artificial intelligence, and Samra Cindrak, media literacy officer at ALIA; Romain Schroeder, coordinator of the educational service at the Zentrum fir politesch Bildung (ZpB); and Jean-Marie Weber, former assistant professor at the University of Luxembourg, theologian and psychoanalyst. The discussion was moderated by Alain Weins.
